What we talk about this episode:
- Where to begin when getting your first chickens
- When to expect chickens to lay eggs
- Kevin’s flock of rescue chickens
About seven years ago I started off with a flock of 28 chickens and I had no clue what I was in for, the problems, the stupid mistakes and the amazing rewards that were on their way. Since that time I have grown very fond of chickens and really enjoy spending time around them. Often that means just sitting down in the grass and letting them slowly come up to you, learn to trust you and before you know it, you have a flock of chickens running to greet you every time you enter their pasture.
Mike Vega has been on this ride with me and I’m grateful for it, he started at the farm five years ago and really did a great job making sure we kept everything running smoothly as we grew. I invited him on The State of Logic to talk about the benefits of raising chickens in your backyard. The episode named “Cracking the egg” takes a deeper dive into raising chickens, what to expect and how to make sure you are doing it right. We don’t provide all the answers but we do provides a great overview, a place that you can start from to do your own research to see if raising chickens is right for you.
Raising my own chickens is one of the best things I’ve ever done and I think more people would be happy if they did it as well!
